TV Graphics Assignment
Inspirational Lower Thirds (ILT) TV Graphic - Static and Motion Animated
Students will create both a static and motion animated Lower Thirds TV graphic for high definition television based on the lessons, tools and techniques taught in class. Students will create a graphic based on an inspirational figure in their life. Students will go through the following stages to produce their graphic:
Stage 1: Research
Stage 2: Concept Sketch
Stage 3: Graphic Development (Photoshop)
Stage 4: Motion Animated Graphic (After Effects)
Stage 1: Research
- Research an individual who inspires you (ie: musician, politician, author, actor/actress, athlete, filmmaker, etc.)
- This individual must be contributing something positive within a community (ie: politics, environment, technology, education, etc.)
- Research and download a high quality image from the internet to use as a place holder background for your graphic
- Research and download an inspirational graphic (lower third or otherwise) from the internet to help develop your idea and explain two reasons why you like that graphic (ie: colour scheme is engaging; font style is interesting; repetition of shapes caught my eye etc.)

Stage 2: Concept Sketch
- Sketch on paper two rough outlines of your lower thirds graphic design using simple shapes and text
- Follow safe title and action overlays
- Use the following icons to create your sketch
Stage 3: Graphic Development (using Photoshop)
- Using Adobe Photoshop students will create a static Lower Thirds TV graphic for high definition television based on the lessons, tools and techniques taught in class. Students will create a graphic based on an inspirational figure in their life.
Stage 3 Requirements
Photoshop Document
- include and follow “Title Safe and Safe Action Overlays”
- incorporates the Design Elements and Principles
- alignment and position of graphic elements are organized to lead the eye
- graphic elements work well together as an engaging design
- includes all four graphic elements as follows:
- high quality images as a background placeholder
- 3 shapes minimum
- 1 logo minimum
- 2 lines of text
- font styles and size must complement the graphic elements and the chosen inspirational person
- two font styles maximum
- create a colour scheme (maximum three colours) that will complement your chosen person and design
- colour scheme demonstrates knowledge of contrast and shades
- image of inspirational person must follow the “Rule of Thirds” and favour the left vertical line or be centre aligned within the frame
- images must be high quality (minimum of 1920 x 1080 pixels)
- no distortion or stretching of downloaded images and logos
- all layers must be renamed to identify the layer content appropriately
- delete all unnecessary/unused layers before saving the final version of your graphic
Stage 3: Static Graphic - Submission Requirements
Hard Copy Submission to Teacher:
- Concept sketch of layout design for lower thirds graphic idea
- Create your own folder on the server folder title your name (ie: Computer #_Student #_ILT_Photoshop)
- Submit both version 1 and your final version in a Photoshop file (.psd) and JPEG file (.jpg) to your folder in the server
- Files named as “Student Name_ILT_TV GFX_Photoshop”
Stages 1-3: Static Graphic Rubric
Stage 4: Motion Animated Graphic (using After Effects)
Using After Effects, students will motion animate the completed Lower Thirds TV graphic previously developed in Photoshop. Students are required to motion animate each element of the graphic using the lessons, tools and techniques taught in class.
Stage 4 Requirements
Composition Duration: 20 seconds
Animation must:
- begin at the 15 frame mark
- end at the 4 second 15 frame mark with all required animated elements
- motion animate your lower thirds graphic both into and out of frame left
- include one use of each transformation: Position, Scale, Rotation and Opacity
- include a minimum of 1 Anchor Point change from composition default centre
- apply Motion Blur and Easy Ease to all text and shape layers
- Only layers required for animation are to be included in the layer stack
- Safe Title Overlay should be deleted from your After Effects composition
- Animations must be smooth and without extra movements
- Minimum of 5 elements to be animated
Reminder:
- When you open After Effects create a new “Composition.”
- Make sure you create it with the correct settings; HDTV 1080 29.97, Width, Height, Frame Rate and Duration.
- When you import your Photoshop file it will apply these initial composition settings.
- Once you have imported your Photoshop file you should delete the New Composition you created when you opened After Effects.
- This should leave only one Composition in the After Effects Project panel.
- Check your composition settings to ensure they are correct for this project.
Stage 4: Motion Animated Graphic - Submission Requirements
Work Submission to Server smb://10.135.128.171:
- Create your own folder on the server folder title your name (ie: Computer #_Student #_ILT_After Effects)
- Submit the After Effects Project File (.aep)
- Submit both two exported video files (.mov); one with the background photo and with Alpha transparency to your folder in the server
- Files named as “Student Name_ILT_TV GFX_Animated”
