Studio Roles

Studio Roles
Hosts:
- “face” of the show
- performing vs. reading script (you can hear a smile!)
- take direction Director and Floor Manager
Floor Manager:
- set a positive tone (be a leader)
- communicate Director instructions to Hosts and studio crew
- provide “time counts" from Director/Assistant Director
Camera Operator(s):
- camera operation (i.e. power, colour temperature, exposure and white balance)
- camera movements (i.e. composition, pan, tilt, zoom and focus)
- properly frame shots of show hosts
Teleprompter/Script Assistant:
- maintain and edit show script as required
- control script pace during show
Audio Operator (A2):
- sets up all microphones for all on-camera show talent prior to broadcast
- ensures battery levels are adequate prior to broadcast
- ensures microphones are properly placed on all on-camera talent
- works alongside Audio Mixer (A1) to ensure proper audio levels are set for broadcast
Weather Presenter:
- writes weather forecast script for broadcast
- performs weather forecast script on camera for broadcast
Control Room Roles
Director:
- responsible for the creative look of the show
- organizes and provides "information" prior to show regarding the required show elements (i.e. videos, music, photos, titles, graphics etc.)
- ensures Crew and Hosts are informed and prepared for show
- “calls” the show live (i.e. determines what and when all elements are seen and heard)
Assistant Director:
- relays "Counts" from Director to Floor Manager
- keeps track of video item times and provides counts back to studio
Technical Director (Tricaster):
- perform a "Fax Check" (ensures all cameras and elements are set up and loaded for show)
- check outgoing audio levels of video items
- "Switches" the show (i.e. cameras, video, audio, graphics and titles)
Audio Mixer (A1):
- checks all audio “sources" prior to broadcast
- balance each input level on audio board
- confirm “studio fold back” with Floor Manager
- "Mixes" all audio sources for the show
Show Segments - Team Production Roles
Each student must choose perform 1 of the 3 team roles.
Producer
- responsible for production and show item content (but not bossy)
- leads brainstorming sessions/meetings
- collaborates with entire production team
- ensures timelines are followed
- ensures creative script is completed and submitted on time
Camera & Audio Operator
Camera
- responsible for the proper working order of his/her camera
- ensures proper camera: focus, white balance and framing
- ensures proper camera composition including Rule of Thirds (variety of shot sizes, angles)
- helps the Producer plan the required shots
- interesting and relevant location and background choices
- camera is level and steady
- communicates with Producer to determine all audio requirements for show item (ie: type of microphone - mic)
- does a test record to preview and adjust for proper audio recording levels
- ensures fresh batteries in all mics for show item recording
- records a clean show item (no unwanted audio/sounds are recorded)
Host / Reporter:
- responsible for writing the show item script (professional and entertaining)
- script should be well written and move the show item/story along smoothly in
- a way that makes sense to the target audience
- ensures creative script is completed and submitted on time
- should practice the script before recording
- should always have a hard copy of the script
- should present themselves in a pleasant and professional manner at all times
- performs the script in a professional and entertaining way
Graphics: (each student will create their own graphics for the segment video)
- communicates with Producer to determine all show item graphics (ie: full page gfx, lower thirds, side panel, motion vs. still etc.)
- researches ideas for required shot item graphics
- designs and creates all required show item graphics with the proper applications (ie: Photoshop, Illustrator, AfterEffects etc.)
- ensures all graphics include only school appropriate content
- ensures all graphics are completed and submitted in the proper format on time
Editor: (each student will edit their own version of the segment video)
- communicates with Producer to determine all show item content (ie: recorded audio/video, graphics, music etc.)
- researches ideas for editing style to successfully communicate show item for target audience
- sets up a proper Premiere Pro project and follows correct editing workflow
- imports and edits all content for show item
- ensures all content included is school appropriate
- ensures final edit is completed and submitted in the proper format on time
