Sound Design:
Background Effects & Effects Editing
Background Effects & Effects Editing
Once you have your list of backgrounds needed - you can use the H4N to record them in the field. Distant traffic is always an issue, it’s ok, try to minimize as much as possible. When recording backgrounds it is essential that the LF (low frequency) Rolloff or HF (high frequency) Pass is turned on to cut out the rumble. Other backgrounds you can source from an FX Library. Especially ones that are not accessible like a subway or driving car.
Once the backgrounds are recorded, they can be loaded into Audition. Once in Audition you can edit out any talking, other noises, and make sure the file doesn’t have any silence on the start or finish. You can then output these files and name them accordingly. “City/rush hour/siren/day.wav”. You’ve now started your own Sound Effects Library!
Once the backgrounds are ready, you can cut them to the picture. They will change from scene to scene, but not shot to shot.
With your list of sound effects, it is now time to compile the FX. Go through the library, finding the FX that match your needs. Try and narrow them down while sourcing. If you need a car drive-by, listen to a few and choose only a maximum of two to try against the picture. Finding the right effect can take days, it’s hard yet essential to be decisive here.
Once the FX are selected, they are brought into Audition and you will place them in sync with the picture.
