Sound Editor / Re-Recording Mixer
The following is a streamlined overview of the post-production process as it relates to your assignment. The post production process is usually occurring from the start of picture editing, and is often the final playback before a picture is released to market.
List of Positions:
Foley Artist - This is the most important role in the sound design process. Foley artists are extremely talented professionals who are responsible for creating (or re-creating) sounds for a production.
Sound Supervisor - The link between the sound team and the director/producers. This role is often done by an Editor or Mixer which are credited as Supervising Sound Editor or Supervising Sound Re-Recording Mixer. In Canada, Editors are Unionized with the Directors Guild of Canada, and Mixers are not. Location sound recordist are handled under production unions.
Sound Editor - Split into two roles. Dialogue and Effects. A dialogue editor handles all production sound, cleaning up background noise, spotting & editing all ADR lines. An effects editor handles all sound effects outside of foley. Doors, glass, weapons, vehicles, backgrounds.
Re-Recording Mixer - Once all the tracks are edited, each department brings them to the mix stage where they are loaded into multiple computers. Each ProTools playback unit can play back 192 tracks, there are usually three of these running in sync. The mixing consoles used are anywhere from 96 to 212 faders. Some mixes are done by three mixers in tandem, a lead, second, and third. Other mixes are two person, and some are solo. The lead mixer will push dialogue and music, the second pushes effects, and the third foley. Mixing is usually about four weeks, and once approved we “re-record” all of the source tracks down to the 5.1 Dolby master, or 10.2 ATMOS whatever the requirements are.
